An Unexpected Moroccan Safari Adventure

Safari vs. Hiking

We started the day with plans to explore the Souss-Massa National Park on foot, fully prepared for a relaxing hike through the reserve. We had read about the trails and hoped to spot some unique birds along the way. However, things took an exciting and unexpected turn.

Traveling with our 18-month-old toddler, we had selected a manageable hike: the Jebel El Kest Trail, a 7-kilometer loop promising beautiful landscapes. But we hadn’t looked closely at where the trail started. Instead, we simply entered “Souss-Massa National Park” into Google Maps, packed our bags, and set off, ready for a day full of surprises.

A private safari guide

When we arrived (or so we thought) at the entrance of Souss-Massa National Park, we were greeted by friendly guides who invited us into the visitor center. To our surprise, instead of a hiking trail, we were offered the chance to join a jeep safari.

Another family joined us, and the guide hopped into their car while instructing us to follow closely in our own jeep. And just like that, our hiking plans transformed into an unexpected Moroccan jeep safari. The guide opened a gated area of the park, revealing a protected section where animals roam freely. It felt like entering a whole new world we hadn’t anticipated but were thrilled to discover.

Moroccan Wildlife

One of the park’s biggest draws is its commitment to preserving Morocco’s endangered wildlife. Souss-Massa National Park is home to some truly spectacular species, and during our safari, we were lucky enough to spot several of them.

The graceful gazelles were a joy to watch as they moved effortlessly across the plains. We also encountered some majestic addax, with their striking horns and calm demeanor. But the true highlight? Seeing ostriches with their adorable chicks. These gentle giants, roaming freely with their young, added a magical touch to our experience.

What makes Souss-Massa unique is the opportunity to observe these animals up close while respecting their natural habitat. Strategically placed lookout points allow visitors to take in the sights without disturbing the wildlife: from small scorpions and beatles to big addax or ostriches.

Family-Friendly Adventure

If you’re looking for what to do when traveling to Morocco with young children, this one should definitely be on your list! As you could drive your own car through the park, it was an easy first safari experience for our toddler. She could sit on our lap to look at the surrounding when driving, and if she got a bit tired, just relax in the back seat. She was thrilled to see the animals, pointing excitedly at every gazelle (whom she called goats at the time) we passed and even taking the wheel from time to time.

Accompanied with an experienced guide, we felt safe right away. And, with the dedicated look-out points, it was an experience with a nice balance between being in the car and exploring and stepping out to take a closer look.

The safari drive took about 2 hours, so come prepared with some water and snacks to enjoy along the way. The tour can be done with your rental car, even if this is not a jeep. Be sure to drive carefully, and be prepared for a bumpy ride!
