Koman: more than a gateway to Komani Lake
A quiet riverside stop almost everyone misses on the way to Albania’s famous fjords
When people talk about visiting Komani Lake in Albania, everybody talks about the beautiful boat trip. Most travelers leave Shkodër before sunrise, board a ferry, admire the dramatic mountain scenery, and continue their journey without ever stopping in Koman itself.
That was our original plan too… But because we decided to drive to Komani Lake ourselves, we chose to spend a night in Koman. A practical decision, turned into a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear river, and a sunset picnic with mountain views, away from the crowds.
Let’s discover Koman together !
Quiet, yet so beautiful
Why we decided to stay in Koman
Most visitors reach Koman by minibus from Shkodër. It’s the easiest option if you want to visit Komani Lake. Hop on the transfer early in the morning, and you’re dropped off right at the starting point of the incredible canyons. But as always, we like the adventure, road-tripping through Albania, we preferred the flexibility of driving ourselves. Because our boat to Komani Lake departed early in the morning, we decided not to risk any driving delays and booked a hotel in Koman for the night.
Looking back, that decision completely changed our experience.

The road is slower than you think
Although the distance from Shkodër to Koman is only about 50 kilometers, the journey took us more than three hours.
When we visited during summer 2025, large sections of the road were still unpaved and filled with potholes. Construction work was ongoing, and locals told us the road should be fully paved by summer 2026. While there seemed to be no end to this road, the views were totally worth it!
For much of the route, the road follows the water, offering beautiful views over Drin River, surrounded by green mountains. Most people don’t take the time to stop and enjoy these viewpoints because, well, they’re sitting in a minibus, with no flexibility. Having our own car allowed us to stop whenever we wanted, stretch our legs, and enjoy the scenery.
If you enjoy road trips as much as we do, the drive itself is worth it.
The best places
are the ones
people pass by
The place nobody talks about
When we arrived in Koman, we checked into Agroturizem Hotel Vila Franceze. The hotel itself is fairly simple. Don’t expect luxury. What makes this place special is its location. Situated directly beside Drin river, the property offers uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains and water.
After checking in, we went for a short walk and discovered direct access to the quiet river. The water was incredibly clear. With only a handful of other hotel guests around, this place stole a piece of my heart. Complete silence, olive trees providing shade in the garden, and the feeling of being completely disconnected from the crowds just minutes away at the ferry terminal. The perfect place for a refreshing swim, which despite the hot summer temperatures, was surprisingly cold !
This was not the Albania we expected to find near one of the country’s most visited attractions.

Our favorite evening in Koman
What started as a quick swim turned into an entire evening by the water. After cooling off in the lake, we grabbed some drinks and snacks from the hotel, and came back for an evening picnic. A towel on the grass was all we needed.
Our toddler happily ran around the open garden, playing with a ball we borrowed from the hotel. Meanwhile, we sat back and enjoyed the view of the mountains reflected in the calm water. As the sun slowly disappeared behind the peaks, the entire area became even quieter.
Well, almost. The only interruption came from a small group of cows. They wanted to taste some of the fruits growing in the hotels garden. It was one of those simple travel moments that wasn’t planned, wasn’t advertised, and yet became one the best memories from our time in Albania. A true hidden gem !

Final thoughts
Koman: Drin River
Before visiting, I saw Koman as nothing more than the starting point for the famous Komani Lake boat trip. In reality, it became one of our favorite stops in northern Albania. The long scenic drive, the overnight stay, the quiet riverside evening. A memorable experience one rarely finds at popular tourist destinations: space, silence, and time to simply enjoy each other and the surroundings.
If you’re planning to visit Komani Lake and have your own car, I would absolutely recommend spending a night in Koman. Not because of the ferry. But because of everything you’ll discover before you even board it.
